Platonic Uses: This 80-200mm f/2.8 is ameliorate for portraits than slower VR zooms because this lens can defocus backgrounds ameliorate with its fast f/2.eight aperture. It is peculiarly well suited to automotive photography considering its conventional diaphragm creates fantastic sunstars on brilliant points of low-cal (newer f/2.8 tele zooms accept rounded diaphragms that don't make sunstars). It's perfect for use on FX digital and 35mm picture for sports, activeness and low-light photography (VR is generally useless for moving subjects); information technology could be the but tele zoom you'll ever demand.
Not for: I wouldn't bother with this heavy professional lens on a DX camera. I'd utilize any DX lens, like the 55-200mm VR, instead. This lens will not autofocus with the cheapest D40, D40x, D60, D3000 or D5000; become any AF-S lens similar the 55-200mm VR or 70-200mm f/ii.8 VR II instead for those cameras. This lens requires moving a switch to go betwixt automobile and manual focus; you'll need a newer AF-S model if this is important to you.

This Nikon eighty-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (new) is the world's best buy in professional telephoto zooms. It is inexpensive because it'due south been in Nikon'due south catalog unchanged since the 1990s. This fully professional person lens is a treat at whatsoever price. Its superior optical and mechanical quality makes one wonder why amateurs rush to throw fifty-fifty more coin at Nikon's latest plastic wonder zooms.
Unlike about of Nikon's lenses today, this jewel is made virtually entirely of metallic, and is precision fabricated in Nihon, not offshored to the lowest bidder. This solid professional lens is built to take a chirapsia, and keep on cranking out brilliant images at ten frames per 2d for years and years to come. In that location are no delicate VR or AF-S mechanisms to break 10 or 20 years from now.
This 80-200/2.8D offers fantastic professional operation brand-new for about the same cost that some people pay for used lenses, or far junkier products like Sigma.
This fourscore-200/two.8 was Nikon's absolute top-of-the-line professional person tele zoom at its introduction in 1997. It nonetheless says "New" on the box considering information technology's an update from the previous 80-200mm f/2.8D (1993-1997).
The even bigger and more expensive eighty-200/two.8 AF-Due south came out in 1999. The fourscore-200/2.viii AF-Southward got canned in 2003, replaced by the 70-200/two.8 VR. The 70-200/2.eight VR was so canned and replaced by the 70-200/ii.8 VR 2 in 2009.
As Nikon introduced and then cancelled each of these successively larger, heavier, more expensive and more feature-laden short-timer models, this extraordinary professional person eighty-200mm f/2.viii lens has never faltered.
This lxxx-200 is about as abrupt every bit, and focuses 80% as fast as the 70-200/two.eight VR 2, which takes the aforementioned pictures but costs twice every bit much.
This 80-200/2.8D is still a very pop lens today, and for skilful reason. It's the least-expensive fully professional f/ii.eight zoom you can buy from anyone today. It's optically magnificent, and mechanically far tougher than Nikon'due south latest and more expensive semi-pro build-quality lenses like the plastic-bodied 24mm f/1.4 ($2,000) and 85mm f/i.4G AF-Southward ($1,650).
Beware: this lens will non autofocus on whatever mirrorless camera.

Compatibility intro peak
Beware: this lens volition non autofocus on any mirrorless camera.
This is an FX lens, and works particularly well with on FX, 35mm and DX Nikons like the D4s, D4, D810, D800, D800E, D750, D610, D600, D7100, D7000, D700, D3X, D300s, F3, F4, F5 and F6. It works fantastically on transmission-focus cameras similar the F2AS, F3, Iron and FA, since it has existent manual-focus and discontinuity rings that work exactly as they should.
The eighty-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (new) works peachy with nigh every movie and digital Nikon camera made since 1977. If you accept a coupling prong added to the diaphragm ring (there are even airplane pilot holes for the screws), it's perfect with every Nikon dorsum to the original Nikon F of 1959.
The merely incompatibility is that it volition not autofocus with the cheapest DX cameras similar the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200 or D5300, merely if you focus manually, everything else works great. These cameras have in-finder focus confirmation dots to help you.

This Nikon lxxx-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (new) is a stunning professional lens.
If you haven't shot or held a real professional person lens in a while, information technology's a pleasance but to hold.
Not only are the eighty-200's optics stellar, it's mechanics and materials are much better than most of Nikon'due south even more than expensive lenses today, well-nigh of which are only plastic.
Focus performance top
AF Speed
Unlike earlier model eighty-200/two.8 lenses, the autofocus is fast! Information technology is significantly faster than all before models of 80-200/two.8.
AF speed varies according to the model of your camera. Pro cameras are very fast, and plastic cameras like the N75 are not quite as fast.
1 full turn (two half-turns) of the AF screw pulls focus from infinity down to 28 feet (8.5m).
The newest AF-S and VR lenses aren't significantly faster, peradventure twenty% faster. As far as AF is concerned, the only reasons to go the newer lenses is considering they focus more quietly, and because you exercise non need to slide a switch to go betwixt auto and manual focus.
AF Kick-back
This 80-200 focuses by rotating its huge front elements very quickly. Equally they rotate, they move in and out.
Because AF is so fast, these front elements spin very quickly and start and cease abruptly. This generates torque reactions, exactly as a real car flips around as you blip the throttle.
This isn't a large deal, but you will feel this every bit y'all shoot on the faster pro cameras like the F5 and D3.
AF Accurateness
My sample is very practiced on my D3, erring simply very slightly at 200mm and f/2.viii.
My sample, on my sample of D3, was a fiddling meliorate once I set the AF FINE Tune to -5. Don't practice this; every sample of lens and camera is different.
Be certain to check your lens on your camera. I call back this is the one lens called out in some Nikon photographic camera instruction manuals every bit being subject to less authentic focus at f/2.8 at 200mm.
AF Noise
The lens is quiet, but the motor in your camera may or may not be.
The D3 and F6 are tranquility enough.
The motor in the F4 is much noisier.
Focus Limiter
The focus limiter is just a mechanical block at about nine feet (2.7m). If you push it forward, the 80-200 2.8 will focus either between infinity and 10 feet (3 meters), or to between 8 feet (2.five meters) and 5 feet (ane.5 meters).
Transmission Focus
Manual focus is fine, just you lot do take to motion a ring from Machine to MANUAL focus. This is this lens' biggest drawback, which isn't much of a drawback.
Manual focus is geared but right, and moves easily plenty to exist worked with ane finger.
Bokeh operation tiptop
Bokeh is the character of out of focus areas, non merely how far out of focus they are.
This lens' bokeh ranges from mediocre to wonderful, depending on your focal length setting. Luckily, it's best at the long end where it counts.
Color Rendition performance superlative
The color rendition matches the remainder of my NIKKORs.
Distortion operation summit
The Nikon 80-200mm f/two.eight AF-D (new) is pretty good at the wider settings, and has some pincushion distortion at the 200mm end. (Both earlier 80-200mm f/ii.8 AF lenses share the aforementioned optics as this AF-D "New" version.) It is never abrasive.
Information technology's better than the 28-300mm VR, 70-300mm VR and 70-200mm VR.
It's about the same as the lxxx-200mm AF-S.
The seventy-200mm VR II is a piffling better, for double the cost.
This tin be corrected for critical apply past plugging these figures into Photoshop's lens distortion filter. These aren't facts or specifications, they are the results of my research that requires hours of photography and calculations on the resulting information.

Ergonomics performance top
Nikon 80-200mm f/two.eight AF-D (new). enlarge.
The 80-200/2.eight D feels nice. Everything is metal, not crummy plastic like almost of everything else from Nikon today.
Its weight and balance are perfect. Materials, fit, terminate, shape and class are all a pleasance. It balances perfectly in a man'south easily with any camera from a D3 to a plastic N75. The big front acts as a stopper to keep your hands from moving too far forward.
The focus limiter is a simple slide switch hands moved by feel every bit y'all shoot.
Your hands naturally wrap effectually the manual focus ring. Your thumb tin motility hands between the A/M band and the focus limiter switches, while your expression (middle) finger works the focus band.
This is great, only I more often motion the stiffer zoom ring, which requires moving my hand towards the dorsum of the lens and using two firmer fingers.
The biggest reason to consider paying twice as much for the newest 70-200/ii.8 VR Ii is if you need fast admission to manual focusing. With this 80-200mm lens, yous must printing a release button and rotate the M - A band betwixt auto and transmission focus; yous cannot only grab the manual focus band as you can with all the newer AF-Due south f/ii.8 zooms.
The tripod collar is great: it easily rotates to exist out of your style for hand-holding.
Zooming feels expert: tight, precise and professional, non mushy plastic.
Eyeblow performance top
None.
As an internally-zooming lens, no air pumps in or out as you zoom.
Falloff (darkened corners) operation tiptop
Falloff on FX is always smooth, so non a problem.
It's strongest at 200mm, and weakest at 105mm.
It volition be fifty-fifty less on DX (come across crop factor).
I've exaggerated this by shooting a grayness field and placing these on a gray groundwork.

Filters, Utilise with performance top
Every bit expected for long lenses, at that place is no problem with vignetting, even with combinations of thick filters.
I dislike the plastic filter threads, which make cross-threading a constant worry. The advantage of plastic threads is that filters don't get stuck, and that the threads usually curve dorsum into place after taking a hitting.
Focal Lengths, effective performance top
Different the newest 70-200/ii.viii VR II, this 80-200 ii.eight'south focal lengths don't wither at close distances.
At its 200mm setting, this 80-200 actually is 200mm at every focus distance.
At 1.five meters (5 feet), the 200mm setting of the seventy-200/2.8 VR II is really just 135mm!
Even though the lxx-200/2.8 VR II focuses a little more closely, its shrinking actual focal length ways that it can't brand images as tight equally this fourscore-200mm f/2.eight.
The maximum reproduction ratio of the 70-200 II is merely i:8.3, while this 80-200/two.8 has a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.9!
Ghosts performance summit
In that location can exist some greenish ghosts, fifty-fifty with the sunday exterior your prototype. Use your manus to shield the lens, and watch your finder if the sun is in the paradigm.
This lens' optics are identical to the other AF 80-200/2.eight versions made since 1988.
I haven't looked for this that much, but from what I have seen, its ghosts are about the same equally the 70-200/2.8 VR (2003-2009), this lens is probably a little bit ameliorate than the 80-200/2.8 AF-Due south (1999-2003), while the newest 70-200/2.viii VR Two (2009-) seems best.
Lateral Colour Fringes performance top
There are no lateral color fringes on the D3, which corrects them automatically.
Macro performance top
Nikon mentions "macro" on the box and in the instructions considering this lens has much closer focusing than Nikon'south 1982-1988 manual-focus 80-200/2.eight. "Macro" ranges were the marketing rage back in the 1980s, and it stuck even to this 1997 lens.
Nikon paints an orange band on the focus scale closer than 6 anxiety (1.8m) and calls it the "macro mode," but it'southward only an orange band. Everything works normally, and this lens just focuses to 5 feet (1.v meters) without any tricks.
With a maximum repro ratio of one:5.ix; this lens gets effectively much closer than the seventy-200/2.8 VR 2, whose shrinking effective focal lengths at close distances requite it only a 1:viii.3 maximum reproduction ratio.
Mechanics performance top
Nikon 80-200mm f/2.eight AF-D (new). enlarge.
Unlike most of Nikon'southward lenses today, well-nigh everything you meet is solid metal. Not only is information technology all metal, it too is so smoothly and precisely machined that it it a pleasure just to agree it and work the controls.

Sharpness performance top
Warning 1: Prototype sharpness depends more on you than your lens.
Warning 2: Lens sharpness doesn't hateful much to good photographers.
With those caveats, the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (new) is sharp. Of class it's precipitous: it was Nikon's most of import professional lens at its introduction, and remains in Nikon's catalog as one of Nikon's most popular professional zooms to this twenty-four hours.
In normal shooting stopped downwards a couple of stops, it's always super sharp border-to-edge at every focal length.
If shooting exam charts at infinity, information technology's a little less precipitous at f/2.8 on the far sides at 80mm, and a picayune less contrasty at f/2.viii at 200mm, but so what; it's still super-sharp and contrasty at 80mm at f/ii.viii where you need information technology, and if the slight (ten%) loss of contrast at 200mm at f/two.8 bothers y'all, either pay twice as much for the newest seventy-200/ii.8 VR II, or end downwardly to f/4.
An fourscore-200mm lens is usually a pro'due south well-nigh important lens. Nikon most certainly makes sure that this lens is splendid, since most of Nikon's (and Canon's) reputation rests on the operation of their f/2.8 tele zooms.
Spherochromatism performance top
Fast, long lenses oft testify spherochromatism, which is when out-of-focus highlights take on slight colour fringes. Laypeople sometimes mistakenly refer to spherochromatism as "color bokeh."
This 80-200mm has some spherochromatism. If y'all really go looking for it, highlights behind your subject area may have slight green fringes, and those in front of your discipline may have slight magenta fringes.
Sunstars functioning top
Dodge Avenger. Tight crop from very center of image, 200mm at f/eleven, x meters.
With its straight 9-bladed diaphragm, the 80-200/2.8 makes magnificent 18-pointed sunstars on bright points of light.
Newer models of Nikon f/2.eight tele zooms can't do this: Nikon curved their diaphragm blades, and then they would have fabricated this epitome without the stars, which would be much plainer images.
Real sunstars can't exist added later in Photoshop with any easy method; they require the real reflection from the extraordinarily bright disk of the lord's day, present in nature but absent in even 16-bit raw digital files, to excite them.
Survivability performance height
The Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (new) is designed to take beatings daily.
The zoom mechanism is entirely internal: nothing moves or pumps in and out as you zoom. Therefore, no air, dust or gasses get pumped in and out of the lens (or your camera) as you zoom.
Recessed drinking glass. enlarge.
The front section moves forrard and dorsum inside the metal-reinforced forepart barrel. If you bang the front of the lens on something, you aren't likely to damage anything. Different more mutual "pumper" zooms, the forepart of the barrel has nada to do with the focus or zoom mechanisms; the drinking glass spins freely inside this barrel equally focused.
Pop on a filter to proceed air and grit out of the forepart of the lens, and you lot're good to get.
This lens is completely mechanical. There is no delicate AF-S motor to die (a common trouble over the years in Nikon lenses), and at that place is as well no VR mechanism to break afterwards a couple of decades of use.
Dissimilar apprentice plastic lenses, and even professional AF-S and VR lenses, I doubtable that virtually of these lenses will still be cranking out great images 30 years from at present, while the newer lenses with more features are far more than probable to have been cast aside equally unrepairable when critical AF-Southward and VR system parts become unavailable.
Tripod Collar operation top
Profile. enlarge.
I've saved some of the best for terminal: the tripod collar is excellent.
It is so precisely made that it spins smoothly with no play when loosened, and locks down with merely the slightest plough of the all-metal lock knob. It is worlds better than the scratchy crud institute on lenses like the Sigma 150-500mm.
The Nikon 80-200'due south collar never comes off, which is good, because information technology'due south so well designed that you'll never want to remove information technology. Flip information technology out of the fashion for hand-held shooting, and it's withal at that place when y'all demand it.
It does not rotate through 360;º it has one carefully-placed terminate. Information technology's easy to position your camera to whatever of the four cardinal settings.
There are no clicks or detents.
It is short enough not to get in the way of manus-held shooting, merely with a pro torso like the D3, you'll usually want to use a tripod-mounting spacer similar the Nikon AH-5 (Nikon part number 4584) to be certain that the photographic camera'due south battery pack doesn't blindside on your tripod caput. The bottoms of pro cameras descend beneath the level of the tripod collar'southward foot.
Zooming performance superlative
Zoom Band, Nikon eighty-200 2.eight.
Zooming is firm and precise. You'll demand ii firm fingers; It doesn't moving picture back and forth as it does on the lxx-210mm f/four. In the 80-200/ii.8, you're moving a lot of glass and metal around on very precise tracks as you zoom.
The focal lengths are very well spaced; information technology is always like shooting fish in a barrel to fix precise framing, only it is house.
EXIF Encoding Accuracy
I got perfect results; my EXIF data always agreed with the setting on the zoom ring.

Intro Specs Performance Compared Recommendations
Be conscientious to get this electric current model with two zoom rings; the "new" version. The push button-pull models are much older and accept much slower autofocus (run into All Nikon f/two.8 tele zooms compared).
This Nikon 80-200mm f/two.8 AF-D (new) was still one of Nikon's most popular professional lenses in 2017, 20 years subsequently its introduction. It remains popular considering it offers fast autofocus and dandy optical operation, both mechanically and optically, for less than half the price of Nikon's other professional person f/2.8 tele zoom, the 70-200/two.8E FL.
The lxx-200/2.8E FL is very slightly sharper at f/ii.8 in the lab (non whatsoever sharper in actual shooting), has less distortion, has VR and allows i to focus manually just by grabbing the ring at any time. I dear VR, just the 70-200mm FL won't work on manual focus cameras as will this 80-200, and VR does nothing for you for shooting sports and activeness. VR only helps if your subject area is non moving.
Otherwise, this 80-200 2.8 takes the aforementioned pictures, is smaller, lighter and is half the price of the lxx-200/2.8 VR II, and renders superior sunstars, which is why this 80-200mm ii.8 AF is still so popular today. This 80-200/ii.8 is a wonderful lens, and it should last you a lifetime.
Beware: this lens will not autofocus on any mirrorless photographic camera.
